纽约市旅游与会展局高层与来自中美两国政府和旅游业界的600余名代表共聚一堂

 纽约市与上海市续签城市旅游合作关系,共同推动两地互惠旅游发展

纽约市旅游与会展局(New York City Tourism + Conventions,作为纽约市五个行政区的官方目的地营销组织和会议及旅游局,于本周再次到访中国,参加在西安举行的第14届中美旅游高层对话。纽约市旅游局总裁兼首席执行官弗雷德·迪克森(Fred Dixon、首席营销官南希·玛玛纳(Nancy Mammana和旅游发展高级副总裁松田麻纪子·贺利(Makiko Matsuda Healy与600余名政府和相关行业机构共同出席了此次峰会。中美旅游高层对话始于2007 年,旨在建立互惠互利的两国旅游业关系。峰会前夕,纽约市旅游局高层一行到访上海,与主要行业机构、媒体和旅游合作伙伴举行了一系列会谈。

活动期间,纽约市旅游与会展局与上海市文化和旅游局正式续签了两地之间的城市旅游合作伙伴关系。这项合作初始于2016 年,为期两年的合作将通过互惠广告交流、分享最佳实践和其他即将开展的活动,以促进两座城市之间的旅游往来。

作为在中国市场持续开展活动之一,纽约市旅游局目前正在与携程同程旅行合作开展消费者营销活动。该活动已于4月初启动,主要通过数字广告、代金券抽奖、票价折扣等形式面向自由行游客,此营销活动将一直持续到6月底。

 

纽约市仍然是美国最大的入境口岸,拥有世界上最繁忙的机场系统,包括拉瓜迪亚机场(LGA)、约翰·肯尼迪国际机场(JFK) 和纽瓦克自由国际机场(EWR)。2023 年,纽约市的旅游业创造了约为740 亿美元的经济影响,直接消费超过480亿美元。这一产业支撑了38余个休闲和酒店业的就业岗位(约占全市劳动力的9%),以及遍布五个行政区的数千家小型和少数族裔企业。去年,纽约市共接待了 6,220游客,其中包括 5,060万国内游客和1,160 万国际游客。2024 年,游客数量预计将增长到6,480人次,恢复至 2019年的创纪录水平的 97%。中国游客今年预计将达到 83.3人次,约为2023 年到访人次的两倍有余。

Yes. Thank you all for coming. Really appreciate you being here on Monday morning. It’s exciting to be back in Shanghai last year, in September. So it’s really wonderful to be back. My colleagues are here just to point out quickly they’re arriving. Nancy Mammana, our chief marketing officer is with us. Nancy is the interim CEO. So when I leave Nancy will be taking over as the interim CEO while my tourism is done. And then of course, you may know Makiko Matsuda Healy. Our colleague, senior VP of tourism development for the organization.

So yeah, so happy to report on the recovery of the Chinese market inbound to New York City. This year, we expect 833,000 Chinese visitors to arrive in New York City and how does that compare to before the pandemic, so the 2019 was 1.1 million. So we are very optimistic, we feel very good about where the market is, and the opportunities for recovery. And we think in 2025 we will soon be back to the level that we were pre pandemic certainly by 2026。

So would you like to discuss the main focus of China market promotion this year, any activities coming up?

Absolutely. And of course, the trade remained vitally important to our effort to attract travel to New York City. So you will you will see us always focusing on the trade and their role in travel to the US and of course to New York City. We were really pleased to relaunch our training materials for our Travel Trade Academy. It’s obviously free, and it’s an online resource and training tool with Chinese language as well. It’s self driving learning about the five boroughs of New York City, and a lot about the content of our members and partners in the marketplace, to inspire the trade and to educate them on all the facets of selling New York City. One of the great things about New York is it is multifaceted, and the Academy is designed to help give them the tools to succeed and it’s been newly refreshed.

And I mentioned we were last year in September with our last mission. We’ll be returning again this September 23 through 27th with our partners returning to Shanghai but also to Guangzhou and Beijing, so that’s trade focus.

And then on the consumer side we are currently running a campaign with Ctrip and Tongcheng that began from April 3 and will run through June 24. Obviously focusing on FIT flight bookings but also Ctrip strengthen the hotel booking platform position and we’re really excited about this effort and we’re seeing very good results so far. We’ll have more to report to you later on.

In the last piece, we’re very excited to renew our city to city tourism partnership with Shanghai. We’ll be doing that in Xi’an at the US-China Tourism Summit this week. That partnership was first signed in 2016. And we’re very excited to renew that partnership again while we’re here. It will provide both destinations with opportunities to promote. An element of the partnership as a media swap, so in New York City later this year for Shanghai and of course for New York City here in the market coming up this part.

So we know that New York is the first and biggest entry point of the United States. Other than China, what are the recovery tourism wise (for other market)?

Yeah. So this year, overall 2024, we expect tourism to be recovered 97% across the board in New York City. So actually quite strong. Domestic has been solid. Europe and Latin America are both major markets for New York City as well. And they’re performing as we expected. So tourism is strong. And we’ll be back to 2019 levels overall next year.

I heard from the Chinese travel agencies that you guys upgraded your site. And there’s like online booking via phone right now. And there is like payment methods, you guys are adjusting to the China market. Do you have any other improvements that you would like to emphasize during this time?

Sure! Many of the New York City tourism suppliers, museums, attractions and hotels, they do have a services catering to Chinese visitors, like map in a website in Chinese language, or some of them do offer those payment, WeChat pay or Alipay, so that they continue to cater to the Chinese visitors. So we are very happy about the maintain that services.

And for our channels can the content and inspiration is obviously most important. And driving the bookings back through the trade partners is one of our major philosophies.

We maintained our social presence in China throughout consistently through the pandemic and beyond. Yeah, and that’s gonna be a big topic of discussion this week. Obviously at the summit in Xi’an, we are seeing the flight  recover. So we’ll have more updates I think after this week on where that is going. Obviously West Coast is recovering the fastest I suppose. And East Coast is an area of development.

Okay, so my last question. I wanted to ask you what’s new, but I already was informed by some of the New Yorkers. Like Virgin hotel, tempo by Hilton, Ritz Carlton and then this little island which is on Hudson River public park. And then there’s a Broadway Museum and then LaGuardia Airport opening up new train station that’s connecting Boston and Washington, and then the ferry taxi the water taxi extension. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

You’re very impressive. Yes, I would just say there’s a few sort of buckets and you touched on them. In terms of what’s new in New York’s are big fanatics. Infrastructure is one. So it continued improvements in our airport facilities mentioned the new LaGuardia Airport, from the from the ground up, complete new build. It’s remarkable winning awards. It’s beautiful. And then JFK, our major international airport is undergoing also a major renovation that will take about five years to be completed in total. But we’ll see major transformations, especially the terminal one, where we see a lot of connectivity, obviously to Asia, new roadways. And the Newark Airport across the river is seeing upgrades as well. They have a new Terminal A. So major infrastructure, you mentioned the train station, Moynihan spectacular, so train access up and down the East Coast, Washington, to Boston, Philadelphia-New York. Very nice. It’s a it’s a major upgrade of services and facilities in New York. And it’s just lovely in a historic building, which is really terrific. And then continued growth in the ferries in the water Taxis, infection. So all of the infrastructure pieces out there for you.

And you mentioned a little island. It’s one of my favorite spots. It’s just spectacular. So on the west side of Manhattan, there’s the continued expansion of the Highline, which is our elevated park in the sky. It just now is connected to Moynihan station. So speaking of the train, you can come right out of the back of the train station connect right to the Highline. And then it continues all the way down to the Meatpacking District in the Whitney Museum. And in the Hudson River just off of the meatpacking neighborhood is little island, which is a project that was a gift to the city by Diane Von Furstenberg and her husband Barry Diller and it is a spectacular city park. Really unlike any you’ve seen. Rising out of piers, in fillers in the water with beautiful landscaping amphitheater. And even food trucks, it’s quite cool. It’s very unique. You have to see, really to appreciate.

And in terms of hotels, you mentioned some of the recently opened hotels. When you think about luxury, the Amman Hotel in New York has sea new level of luxury. And we are highly anticipating the Waldorf Astoria, its return at the end of this year, Chinese ownership. So it’s an important investment in New York City. It’s a it’s a will be a big moment for the Hilton Hotel Corporation and for New York. The original flagship Waldorf returning after being closed for quite a number of years, about 10 years. So we’re really excited about that. So we have about 121,000 rooms in inventory today. But we’re going we’re adding about another 10,000 rooms over the next two years. And it runs the gamut from luxury like the amount of the Waldorf. The new Fifth Avenue Hotel also is a spectacular development. But then new neighborhood developments as well, 2 Renaissance hotels in particular that are getting a lot of attention, one in Harlem and next door to the newly renovated Apollo Theater. And then the Harlem in the Renaissance flushing Hotel, which obviously is anchored in one of our major Chinatown districts in New York.

Next to the Renaissance Flushing, there is an Asian style shopping mall. So if you forgot something to bring, you can (buy everything there). And it has a great view of the runway of the airport as well. Some of the aircraft fanatic can be really excited about that.

And then the last major variant is arts and culture. Of course, New York is just known for its arts and culture. You may have seen the Met Gala, which was just less than two weeks ago. And the new exhibition for the Metro museums Costume Institute is now open running through the summer. Quite an interesting exhibition. But the Met also has another exhibition that we are drawing a lot of attention to, which is a celebration of the Harlem Renaissance art movement. It’s called “Harlem Renaissance and the transatlantic modern modernism exhibition”. It’s running at the Met through the middle of the summer through the end of July. And it’s quite spectacular. And it’s focused on Harland Carlin’s influence on the world, certainly in the in the art movement as well.

And they have a really exciting exhibition coming up in the fall. We’re all really much looking forward to it called “edges of elite”, celebrating the impact in the life of Alvin Ailey, famous choreographer, and founder of a dance company in New York City that really is well known and beloved around the world. So it’s the first time a major American Art Museum has celebrated dance, and in one particular dance artist and creator, choreographer, and in the fall, so that’s going to be quite cool. You’ll be able to go to the museum and see performances of the dance company as well. So we’re excited about that.

You may remember last year was the 50th anniversary of hip hop, and its birth in New York. We’re happy to say that the exhibitions of that anniversary continue. The American Museum of Natural History is opening “ice cold”, an exhibitions of hip hop jewelry, which is kind of cool. That’s coming to the AMNH later this year actually opens this week. It’s going to run through the end of this year.

I was just wondering, because New York is a big entry point. Do you guys have the statistics as how many Chinese visitors come through to New York compared to the whole America or no.

In terms of visitation to New York City? So 833,000 that are expected this year. Oh, just over 3 million Chinese visitors are expected in the US this year. So, our market here is quite strong. Obviously West Coast is still a major player, but the East Coast is growing with New York City as the as the primary entry point.

Do you also have statistics that’s how big the China market is at the moment? To New York.

We talked about the recovery rates 66 million with the number of travelers we had in 2019 were 97% back. We think forecast for this year is 64.8 million so 65 million travelers ideally this year 833,000.

Yeah, one of the biggest trends, actually pre pandemic that has grown even more today is this notion of niche destination and exploring beyond the icons. So, New York is a great destination for that. Young people in particular setting trends for neighborhood exploration in New York. And we’re seeing exploration by a few sort of categories. Culinary is one, which is guiding exploration, exploring new foods. New York is very multicultural. So in addition to our sort of three large major Chinatown districts, you have, perhaps the most diverse community in the US, if not the world, and you can explore it by food very easily. That’s a popular trend.

So that’s a trend that we’re seeing young people in particular fall into. You’ll see the product in New York is matching food tours are very popular, right? When we saw them before for things like pizza and bagels, but now we’re seeing them and by cuisine and culture type. So touring Jamaica, I’m sorry, touring Flatbush in Brooklyn, for example, is a great way to explore all the Caribbean influences in New York. There are great sightseeing tours, focused on food and small independent businesses. And these are very popular with young travelers.

The the US government’s making a concerted effort to recover visa facilitation process. And we know now in Shanghai, for example, it’s back to about 100 days, wait time, Beijing 66 days. So they are making progress. And there’s real commitment to seeing that improves. We’ll hear more from the government this week. But we’re optimistic that facilitation will be on track in the near term and will not be a major impediment to growth.

Yeah, great question. I think for us, there’s a bit of a theme, in the overall recovery of the market. And one is that returning to sort of normal patterns, which has been very welcomed. We first signed our MOU with Shanghai in 2016. We’re excited to be renewing it again to getting back into the pattern of promoting travel, reciprocally, between our two cities, which is one of the things we’re most excited about. Also the assets that partnership will bring as well. So expansion of our campaign efforts in China this year, expansion of Shanghai’s efforts in New York to drive travel from New York in the United States into China, as well as an outcome of this partnership is something we’re really excited about.

In terms of the summit itself this week, again, returning to the first time that we’ve convince since 2019, the US and China, major travel partners in the market, we’re both committed to seeing long term growth and long-haul travel between the US and China. And the opportunity to be together with our colleagues to learn the latest market trends just this morning. Data that we have learned has been really helpful in strategizing and helping foster growth in the marketplace. And we expect to have even more data sharing this week when we’re together with our partners and exploring opportunities for growth is going to be really key. I think it’s an important sign of confidence in our two markets. And as I mentioned before, it’s a really good sign to be back to this normal pattern of exchanging best practices between US tourism and China tourism, and we’ll be working towards our goal of attracting more than a million Chinese back to New York next year.

New York and Shanghai have always been tourism partner cities, what are the unique advantages and resources of the two cities in tourism cooperation? How can we better utilize these advantages?

Yeah, thank you. You know, it’s a unique position that we’re both in, Shanghai and New York, two largest cities, each of our countries, very important out on gateways, obviously centers of commerce and trade, very diverse cities as well. So there’s a lot that we share in common with Shanghai. As we work towards returning flight capacities between our countries, it’s really important to continue driving demand. These partnerships offer unique avenues to drive demand, obviously increase awareness of the friendliness and the long relationship between our two cities, but also the opportunity to run campaigns in each other cities with a no cost which is really an important aspect of this partnership. So Shanghai is campaign in New York later this year, our campaign which will run here in Shanghai, in autumn, prove to the airlines and the government’s both the demand is strong for travel between our two cities, and help fuel the argument for faster return flight capacities. And also an important sign of strength to our trade partners as well in the popularity of our destinations, and foster faster recovery for tourism overall.

What are the new changes and highlights of the MOU signed this year compared with the previous cooperation?

The important aspect is that we’re renewing it. We’re just very excited to be back in partnership with Shanghai again. The model is very similar as before, it’s exchanging best practices. But also these targeted campaigns later this year are really critical. So again, return to normal patterns of behavior between our two countries and two markets are going to be really critical. We’ll have more details on the partnership when we signed it on Wednesday. But I think in terms of the partnership, really the foundation elements are the media elements and the sharing of best practices. And those we are making a partnership this year. It’s very solid partnership. We’re excited.

I think there is some differences in the media components, which is really great. And this time, there is a dragon TV channel component to the media here in Shanghai. So that is a new element in addition to the out of home, so the bus shelters in the metro media here in China. So it is a bit of an expansion of the media assets that Shanghai is offering us. And in New York, we have the digital screens across the five boroughs, which we call “Link NYC”. So these are digital screens on the streets, in addition to bus shelters and new stands. So the media vehicles have evolved to a degree, which we think will make campaigns even stronger this year. So that is the slight difference to the model.

It’s an exciting moment. After 18 years in New York to move to this new role. At Brand USA. We’ve been active in the market and Makiko and I were talking about this yesterday, since 2007, we first established presence in China. Makiko was active in the market for New York City even before so a long relationship here. Brand USA came into existence in 2011. And together have worked with us, the destinations across the US to grow the Chinese market, now the most economically important market to the United States, the highest spending. And we think we’ll be very much a major player in the future of tourism to New York. So it is exciting to be here on the cusp of this change. And I begin there July 15. And we’ll have plenty of time to talk about new ideas and visions. But I’m really proud of the team in New York. We’re in great hands.

Obviously. We have great partners locally with this team here in market, but under the leadership of Nancy, who will be the interim CEO beginning June 6. And of course Makiko has been leading the charge on tourism, especially in this region. As I mentioned, for a very long time. Future’s bright, so I look forward to working with them just with a different hat. After working with all of you to continue to grow what is the most important economic relationship in tourism between the US and any country in the world.

Yeah, we are, absolutely. And the team here has his efforts on the way. We have a colleague dedicated to Asia, in New York for mice, Watson Lee. And we are renewing efforts to attract the market. We know New York, of course has a long way for incentive groups and meetings in particular, but we’ve had real success. And we look forward to building that. Back in the near term. Leisure travel, of course is leading recovery. That’s true sort of across the board. But MICE will remains a major focus for us.
